It’s always tempting when shooting a portrait of someone who does something extraordinary to shoot them doing the thing they do. This is fine of course, but it’s nice occasionally to try a different approach. Katie Hardwick is a circus performer working principally on aerial silks and rope, and whilst I have rigging points in my studio, I thought I’d forgo them for something a little more different. She has a striking look, so I thought I’d focus on that, and bring her rope in as a costume, rather than something she dangles from. While we were at it I tried a few alternative portraits for fun, especially as she also does a bit of acting on the side.
